SNV Netherlands Project

SNV Netherlands implements Urban Sanitation initiatives in southern Bangladesh, Gazipur and at national level, under the leadership of Local Government Authorities (City Corporation and Municipalities) and one its programs is to provide technical support to Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) to improve wash and sanitation system. The most of the GCC population have access to toilets but the toilets are mostly unimproved and, for most, sludge ends up untreated in the environment, drains, waterways and marginal lands because the significant number of building do not have containment ( either septic tank or pit) to contain faecal sludge. Outlet of septic tank is connected with drain and effluent from septic tank is traveling through drain. So, black water from septic tank is ultimately ends up at river Turag and Chilai, canals and waterways.

This scenario may create several environmental and health risks for the people. GCC wastewater management initiative proposes to provide the infrastructure and services to ensure improved and safe collection, treatment and disposal of faecal sludge and wastewater. To make this initiative successful, it is crucial to have improved and safe containment in each building but it needs creating awareness and demand at different level – from mass people, house-owner, engineer and mason to city planner/policymaker level for which a Behavior Change Communication Program will be launched. The objective of the BCC campaign is to raise awareness and knowledge on septic tank and soak well, to finally motivate people to adopt the desired behavior of upgrading their sanitation facilities to be safe for public health and environment. targeting different consumer and service providers.

To meet the objective of the campaign Plan and different BCC materials to support the campaign BCCP has been awarded the assignment “BCC Campaign and material design for Sanitation behaviour In Gazipur City Corporation” (Phase-1). Under the assignment BCC has developed 3 Campaign ideas consisting of 1) Logo and tagline 2) Concept Card for Stream 2 and 3) Concept Card for Stream 1.

Target Audience:

Stream 1 (Influencers): Building approval authority–Members of Building Plan Approval Committee of GCC, policy planner and relevant personnel of RAJUK, GCC’s Ward councilors and administrators, Engineers, Masons.

Stream 2 (Decision makers):  Various types of residential buildings, , Apartments – President/Secretary of Resident Associations, Flats – Owner, House Owners -Low-income community, Individual house Owner.

   Pretesting is under process to finalize one campaign ideas and based on the final campaign BCC materials to be developed in Phase-2.
